Cold-Processed Soap Questions Answered

Have you ever wondered about the ins and outs of cold-processed soap, you are not alone! Many people are curious about the benefits and unique qualities of this artisan product. Below, I’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions about cold-processed soap to help you understand why it might become your new skincare favorite.
1.) Why Use Cold-Processed Soap?
Cold-processed soap is often preferred for its Superior texture. It tends to be creamier and smoother than commercial soap, and the cold process creates glycerin, which is fantastic for your skin. Interestingly, glycerin is often removed from commercial soaps and sold as a separate byproduct, making more money for the manufacturers. But in cold processed soap, the glycerin REMAINS, which helps to moisturize your skin by attracting moisture from the air. (Ahem, Hello dry Colorado!)
2.) What is the White Powder on Some Soap Bars?
If you have noticed a white powder on some soap bars, don’t worry – it’s safe! This is known as soda ash or sodium carbonate, which forms when there’s a reaction between lye and air. It does not affect the soap's effectiveness and will disappear after your first use. I think it adds a bit of character to these rustic-looking bars!
3.) What is Re-batched Soap?
Re-batching (or hand milling) is a technique used by artisan soap makers and is essentially the equivalent of French milling. The process involves using a previously made soap, heating it up, and adding new ingredients such as essential oils or additional soap shreds. A liquid is then added until the soap dissolves into a smooth consistency. Re-batched soap has a shorter curing time, so you can use it sooner – which is a definite win in my book!
4.) Is There Lye in Cold Processed Soap?
Yes and no. Lye (also known as sodium hydroxide) is necessary in the process of making soap. It triggers saponification, the chemical reaction that occurs when oils are combined with lye to form soap. However, if the process is done correctly, there is no lye left in the final product. All that remains is beautiful, skin-loving soap and glycerin!
